Default Opinion before purchase

Hi, sorry for my first time post being this, but I wanted to get real opinions before making a purchase.

A friend has a 2010 dodge ram 1500 SE for sale for $6500. It's a clean title, has 119,000 miles.

Although its a work truck its been babied. My question is are there very serious problems that arise in the 4.7l v8 on this truck? Since its a little aged I wouldnt want to drop 6.5k and then need to replace the engine in 10k miles. I ask because the internet seems filled with crazy expensive fixes that pop up at any mileage for the 5.7. I test drove it and I didn't notice any weird engine noises or signs of serious wear and tear.

Is it worth it for that price? I was looking for a truck because I do a lot of side I.T. work, and the ram is the most attractive truck to me!

Oh yea, I'm a student so although I have the money I'm not swimming in it!

Thanks for the help and opinions.

Value depends a fair bit on location. I would look around on craigslist, etc, and see what similar trucks are going for. Also, how many miles on it? The 4.7, just like the 5.7, are hit and miss..... if taken care of, they can last a good long time. If neglected, they won't even make it past 100K miles.

I think they may be a lil high priced,,, I know my 09 is a quad cab but its a sport version with heated/cooled seats navigation, leather seats has pretty much every option but sunroof and has about 130,000 miles on it,, and i live in canada and I am not sure I could get 6,500 for mine here ,, if it was me I would be looking around as new and used truck prices have seemed to be coming down because of this coronavirus crap ,, but its up to you,,, like heyyou said.. it hit and miss with any truck nowadays,,, good luck with your search

This one is in West Texas. It's a dry place. It has 119k miles.

I've been looking around on Craigslist, offerup, and stuff for over a month. Although prices vary a lot generally this is the cheapest one I've ever seen. Everything else is 9000+, and usually has 140k - 160k+ miles. Regardless of the trim package ><. Anything with less miles tends to have a rebuilt title.

To me it looked like a pretty good deal but I wanted other more experienced opinions.

I'm just hoping that if I get it and baby it more that I'll be able to take it to 200 before anything... Catastrophic happens.

You don't really have to baby it. Just take care of it. Do the maintenance when it is required. There is a guy around here somewhere with well over 200K on his 4.7.

Given that information, looks like a good deal. If you know the trucks has been at least reasonably well taken care of, go for it.

Hi, here is my opinion and experience. I just bought a 2011 ram 4.7L slt 4x4.
I bought it from here Saizerais in France and I just had some pics before to by this truck. It was at Cheryhill pensylvania. The only think I didnt want was rust. The seller tild le thet is no rust on. This have 167000 miles. When I get it in France rock panels and corner have been make up to hide hole and rust. For me this is the worth cause I can't work the body. One week after I fill cooling then white smoke...head gasket burned....then parking brake pad was to be replace rear disk...front wheel bearing. If you feel that yiu are ready to work on this truck go. It can be the way to learn mechanics. I bought mine 7500.00usd. With all I have to work on it I don't regret cause it s a pleasure to drive. My consumption is 14 liter/100 km with E85...great ! I all work by myself but not bodywork, it still to be repared.
Hope this will help you.

I'd be very sad to buy a truck and blow the head gasket a week later. Sounds like you were able to fix the engine though so glad it wasn't a complete bust for you! I'm in the process of acquiring the one I posted about. Seems like a good choice. Thank everybody who gave their opinion.
