Default 4x4 lock turning

When i was stuck in the snow i put the truck into 4x4 lock (not knowing what that was) and turning side to side and then i heard a crack, after i got unstuck it said the front driveshaft was overheating and the 4x4 stopped working. What would the problem be??

The vehicle told you the front d/s was overheating? Do you remember the exact verbiage?

I know on Jeeps the transfer case can overheat on AWD/full-time 4wd models because the "lock" for the front output is nothing more than mashing a clutch pack together and then "locking" it there. This sounds plausible in your situation

If 4wd still works, I'd leave well enough alone. If not, you likely need to rebuild the clutch pack in the t-case.
