Default Failed Lifter/Cam - Replace Parts or Engine?

Had a misfire on my '12 Ram with the 5.7L (188k kms) that forced me to park it for a few years as I wanted to be ready for the worst case scenario (engine). Misfire was on cylinder 5 and only under WOT >4k RPMs.

It's at the dealership now and I was called to advise that found about three metallic flakes on the VVT screen. They said the decision was mine and they could do the repair but the presence indicates metal is likely throughout the engine and suggested it would be better to go that route.

I really only plan to have the truck for another few years so not sure which way to go. Here is a photo of the VVT screens so was hoping to get some feedback based on what others have done:

Still looks pretty clean to me.... Will the pull the motor and clean it out if they do the cam/lifters? If so, which is cheaper, replace, or repair? If not, I would be tempted to go with replace.

I don't think they pull the motor unless the FSM calls for it. I do know they drop and remove the oil pan to fully clean it.

Replacement of both sides of lifters and cam is $5400. Rebuilt engine is about $9500 with a possible few hundred more on gaskets. Another shop advised a rebuilt for $8500.

If they are good at cleaning, just do the cam/lifters then. (they DO warranty their work for 1yr/12K miles, right??) I am thinkin' if it makes it thru the warranty period, you are golden.

Yuppers! Two year/unlimited mileage on lifters and cam. Went ahead with replacing the lifters/cam.
