Hey Guys. 2011 Outdoorsman with the 5.7. Got a code of P0481 for the fan. Sure enough the fan doesn't come on when the A/C is on and kicks on the code. 60a fuse is good. I test power at the relay.Good. I test the fan connector and I get power at one terminal. So I pull the can and decide to test that. Hit with 12v and it spins fine. But in doing that I see that the fan has 2 male pins and my connector has 3 female. And the connector gets power on the wire that doesn't match up. Not constant power but controlled by relay. So I put in jumpers. Neg to Neg. Powered third terminal to fan second terminal and fan operated as it should. Controlled by the A/C. What am I missing here? why does this not match and why is this a new problem?

Does the fan only have two wires running to the connector?

 

Yes. Just 2 wires. Three on the other side of the connector.

 

That's kinda strange.... Have you tried clearing the code? I suspect the third wire is a 'sense' wire, to tell the PCM the fan is running, but, that would imply there should be a third wire on the fan side of the connector as well....

 

Ok, two speed fan.... there is a relay in the TIPM as well, for low speed.... not sure how it is determined that one is triggered.... no detail of the TIPM....

 

Yes. Cleared code. With the connector plugged in the CEL will stay off until I turn on the A/C. With the connector unplugged the light will come on regardless. I jumped out the connector with the 3rd wire to the 2nd pin on fan and it works but light comes on.

 

so are there 2 relays? I was tempted to try and trace the wires back to the TIPM but I stopped when I tried to understand the 3wire to 2 wire connector. When I jump the relay it puts power to that lone 3rd wire. The 2nd wire which connects to the powered wire of the fan never saw power.

 

The relay in the TIPM is power from the same fuse as the one not there.... (I don't really know where it is..... I'm just readin' wiring diagrams...) So, it's entirely possible the low speed relay isn't working, and that is what the PCM is whining about. The three wires on the connector are for low speed, high speed, and ground...Dark Blue/Dark Green is is low speed power feed, Dark Green/Dark Blue is high speed power, and black, (which should be in the middle) is ground.

 

Ok. I think I’m picking up what your saying. There is high and low speed but my fan being 2 wire is set for low speed which isn’t working. So where is the low speed relay?
I did think the fan on full voltage was rather loud and don’t recall ever hearing it before.

 

Low speed is in the TIPM.
