Default 2012 Ram Camshaft question

My cylinder 5 was having a miss fire. So I went through the normal fixes with my local dealer. Turns out the camshaft needs to be replaced which ok. I was quoted 14 hours labor time. The service guy told me that I might as well have the oil and water pump changed as it wouldn't add any additional time. Which makes sense. Was also told by the service writer that the manufacture of the parts sells to different retailers which sells for different prices. So the parts department gave me a list of the parts needed and the part numbers and I took that to a national parts dealer which will remain nameless and I got all of the parts considerable cheaper. Fast forward that service writer has been fired and the new person told me 20 hours not 14 hours and quoted me an additional $575.00 in parts needed and the oil pump wouldn't be changed.

Question would changing the oil pump add additional hours on the repair time???

I just finished a camshaft repair on a 2012 5.7 a couple of weeks ago. Yes the pump adds labor and parts.

The oil pan has to be dropped to replace the pump. The lower pump mounting bolts and pickup tube bolt can’t be accessed with the pan in place. Additionally, there’s not enough clearance to remove the pump from the crankshaft with the pan installed.

Thanks, the first service guy said no extra time in replacing the oil pump so I bought the oil pump. The extra parts was because the "new" people said some bolts were broken ect so I went with it. Again thanks because ordinally I thought bs was being told to get more $$$.

It can be difficult to put together an accurate quote depending on what software/program is being used. For example, the program might list oil pump replacement as being 1/2 hour labor, but that’s only for pump removal & installation and doesn’t include time to remove the oil pan, timing cover and other parts necessary to access the pump. So then the service writer needs to look up the additional labor times for every other component to total the labor.

I don’t expect a dealer program to be that difficult to use but I couldn’t say for sure.

Additionally, Some service writers/advisors have little or no experience in the field and don’t know how to account for everything; whereas some are techs that just can’t turn wrenches anymore and can provide a better estimate than the program.

I had a local shop here in DFW do the cam replacement. We went with a Flyin Ryan Performance Mark82 cam kit with MDS delete for $2400 plus a tune for $1300. It took him every bit of 4 days working on it in the background (I was out of town and left it with him for a week). The front clip comes off (both fenders, grill, bumper), intake and both heads come off, timing cover and all front driven accessories come off, oil pan comes off. Clean everything up, replace and degree the cam. Replace the oil pump (All the trash from the cam coming apart will chew the oil pump gears up since it is pre-filter), new timing set, all new gaskets, clean up the heads, and put it all back together. Total cost was about $9,500 and most of that was labor after the $3700 on kit and tune.
