Default Synthetic Oil

When should I wait to change the oil to Synthetic. I have about 275 miles on my 2010 Ram (Hemi). I am a big fan of Synthetic Oil but I know the engine needs to break in good first.

This is an age old question. Some say wait until the first oil service is due...others switch right away. Several performance vehicles come with synthetic from factory...Corvette and Porsche come to mind. Have run synthetic since the 80's and have had no oil related issues with changing earlier than first service. Bought a new Goldwing and rode it 220 miles home from dealer....pulled the drain plug for synthetic replacement before ever going into house!!

Currently have 1700 miles on my 2010 and will change to synthetic next week before a 3000 mile trip.

I'm with Tranz on this. I've used Mobile 1 for about 15 years now and never had any oil related problems with any vehicle I used it in. I only waited until my first service because of the expense. But if you don't care about the cost, do it now I don't think it will matter either way. Just an FYI, Walmart sells several brands of syn oil in 5qrt jugs. My first change I bought a 5qrt jug and 2 extra qrts, but on the 2nd oil chg, I just went ahead and bought 2 of the 5 qtr's. The jugs make it easy to carry the used oil to the recycler.

IMHO wait for the first oil change. In my truck, and I've seen it on other posts, the first oil change light comes on right at 2500 miles or so. After that, the light stays off longer - so I suspect that the factory programs in the first oil change at 2500.

I've got to believe there are some special additives in the factory oil for break in purposes. Anyway, why risk it? I went to mobil1 for the second oil change.

Another thing, the first oil change is a bear - the oil filter is on very, very tight. Be ready to fight it.

Does synthetic oil have any detergents in it because I believe you must use an oil that has some type of detergent.

I would run the oil in there now until 1500 miles. Then go with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. If you go to early you run the risk of not letting the piston rings set correctly as they are used to conventional at the moment.

I ran mine to 500K+ with a very good breakin than switched to Mobile one 2000 semi synthetic 5W-20. Got Oil changers to do the first change, as I heard it's a pain to remove the filter. Just bought 5x5 Litres of Mobile one full synthetic 5W-20 at Walmart for $31 Cnd a jug. Will change myself at 5-6k and will be changing every 5-6K with Mopar filters.

This was my question. I also have a 2010 Harley Davidson and the recommend not untill after 5000 miles, reasoning is for break in period to make sure the rings seat good. Thanks, I will wait till the first changes. BTW, I run Royal Purple in my bike, but will run Mobile 1 in the truck. Price reasons

I made the change at the first oil change, around 2700 miles. Since then I've swapped each time between Mobile 1 and Royal Purple. I've ran both of those in vehicles for years and I've never had any issues.
