Default 2010 Ram1500 rim corrosion

I have a 2010 ram 1500 sport with 35000kms and my aluminum chrome clad rims are corroding. Dealer says chrysler only warranties rims for 1yr 20 000km, what does everyone suggest? This is happening on all four rims.

I could hardly get my rims off the hubs when I went to put on my snows this year. Anti-sieze them I guess. As far as the corrosion....Aluminum will do that. I wonder if powder coating them, or plasti-dipping them would help?

Are you talking about hazing/pitting of the plasti-chrome cover or about corrosion of the back of the alloy rim where it meets the hub? I've had decent luck dealing with the former by using some type of plastic polish that I can't recall right now. I think it was Mirror Glaze.

At first I thought he was asking about the chromed plastic covers as well, but then I reread and saw he was talking about the rims themselves. I have corrosion on mine as well. I just cleaned them down with my roto tool and sprayed with a corrosion prohibitive that we had at the airport. Made for inside airplane wings and such to keep corrosion under control.
Like this stuff you can buy in a can.

Chad,

When was the last time the vehicle was diagnosed by a dealer for this concern? The basic factory warranty covers defect in material or workmanship and will cover the adjustment, repair or replacement of any factory installed part of your vehicle except tires for 3 years of 60,000 km. Rims are included in this warranty coverage.

Keep in mind, road salt, car washes, scuffs and scratches, and everyday abrasion from sand and dirt can affect the appearance of a vehicle's wheels (steel, chrome and aluminum) and other undercarriage parts. Some surface corrosion with use is normal; it is not a defect and is not covered by any warranty.

I've had the same problem with my chrome clad rims, I happened to have one spare rim from an accident and out of curiosity I pried the plastic chrome cover off (it's just glued on) and underneath is a nice aluminum rim... so now I'm saying to hell with the plastic crap chrome rim and I'm altering my wheels to just nice aluminum rims.
Just an FYI if anyone is wondering what is under those cheap plastic covers..

It is only the plastic that is getting that brown/green corrosion. If it was a body panel or steel one would think its rust. One dealer told me it was a result from salt on the hwy. This truck is not my primary vehicle, I have a 1/4 ton to drive to work everyday and only use my truck for weekends, and if the hwys are mucky or melting the hemi stays in its garage and take my wifes jeep. I put 16,000kms on last yr and spent $275 in preloaded wash keys at the car wash, and the truck if not being driven spends every other moment in the garage, so this goes to show how well I take care of my vehicle. So sorry I will NOT buy the "its caused by hwy salt" B.S. excuse. If i would have known these plastic rims were going to corrode and look like ****, I would have opted for some ST steel wheels and put some nice aftermarket rims on.
Please let me know the process and results of removing the plastic off the rims. Maybe some pictures?

I will take some pictures, right now I have the plastic cover off and about half of the glue removed so I can get some good in-between shots on my test rim.
I bought the truck used and had no idea these rims would do this, my last truck was a 2008 Ram with the 20" aluminum rims (no plastic covers) and those wheels looked awesome. As I discovered though, that's the same rim behind these "chrome" rims.
Will try to take some pictures tonight and upload them to show the transformation.

All manufactures have this problem with chrome clad covers. My Ford Explorer had the same issues every year following winter due to the volume of salt exposed on the roads.

Every spring I use a fine hand polish and gently remove all the surface imperfections because of this, and no problems through summer and fall. It's the same as owners with light color vehicles noticing what looks like rail dust around fenders. It simply most the time metal fibers embedded within the clear coat due to rotor wear. Ask anybody with a early model Ford Taurus from the 90's, they suffered heavy rust issues because of this.
