Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Basically it takes exhaust gases and puts them back into the intake so the motor doesn’t have to use more fuel to burn, since exhaust still has fuel in it. It makes for better fuel economy and emissions. But it does not affect performance. The EGR will close when you are full throttle so you get cold dense air for performance. Motors before 1996 had EGR. 1996 and after dodge went to the OBD2 computer system which did not need EGR.

EGR is mainly an OBDI phenomenon, and was developed primarily to help reduce emissions. When OBDII was introduced EGR was no longer needed.

Yes the block and heads are the same as your setup. The EGR only comes from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. Let me know if you want me to strip the motor down to block and heads for you and when you want to come get it.

Can you post more detals on the engine? If you have photos you can include here. I need one for my aging 318 in my 87 Ram 250 van but will have to have the work done at your location, where ever that is. my 318 running strong at 140,000 miles but need to make some long camping trips without fear. the more details you give, the beter your chance of selling it.
