I have an amp and sub sitting in my close and want to put them in my ram but i dont want to buy new head unit. How can i install the sub with factory head unit. I think I heard something like trying to add rca lines out but how? and should i power the stock speakers or just the sub.

If you check with your local audio shop they can supply you with the adapter that will allow to add the rca outs that you need in order to hook up the amp. You will take the rear speaker wires and splice them to the adapter. If your still running stock speakers then I would only power the sub as the stock speakers wouldn't be able to handle the power.

This adapter will reduce sound quality though.

I dont know if you have found any help with this yet, but my husband owns a car stereo shop in south carolina so im pretty knowledgable about all this and anything I dont know he can help with. What is the make and model of the amp and subs you will be using? How many channels your amp is will determine whether or not you can hook up your factory mids and highs to it. Hooking an amp up to a factory head unit yields different results, some good and some bad. The results are always best with an after market head unit.

Some amps have "speaker in" wiring already built in which is a live level converter.I bought one of those "line-level" converters, hooked up a amp to a pair of 12's in the Ram that I had. It sounded great. The issue on sound quality is usually of when hooking anything other than subs up. Because subs are low freq and omni-directional the stereo seperation and signal to noise is not that much of a concern to the average user. Just make sure you do some shopping around, you get what you pay for. A $10 unit from Walmart will not perform as well as a unit from a stereo shop.
