add amp to factory stereo
I have the cd/cassette/radio 6 speaker (infinity?) system in my 98 ram 1500. I want to add an amp and sub and keep the stock system. when i tap into speaker leads i have to unplug input to amp everytime i turn the truck on or i get no sound to the set of speakers im tapping into. Need some help with were to tap into lines at (after factory amp, rear speakers, front speakers?) Currently i have an aftermarket h/u in and it works just fine with that but why wont it work with the stock h/u? (aftermarket is getting old and i want the tape deck back)
What sort of hardware are you using trying to integrate the amplifier? And if you're looking for better sound quality, you can buy aftermarket units that have a tape deck built in. An aftermarket will have a much higher output than any factory source unit, and also a much highter signal to noise ratio. And the Infinity packages in most late 90's and early 00's are pretty weak. Swap in some new coaxials to get the most out of your truck.
I went behind the factory h/u and tapped into the front right and left speaker wires with scotchlock instant tap connectors. Tapped in with the high level input plug to the amp. Remote wire is running out of fuse pannel. Like I said, when i plug in my pioneer cd player instead of stock h/u (plugged in with the $10 wiring adaptor from walmart) the front speakers continue to work just fine along with amp and sub. When used with stock h/u i have to unplug and replug the Hi-L plug to amp in order for front or amp to work. Its like the stock unit knows im messing with its workings.
Just currious, I know only the front 4 speakers are amp powered, would that amp by chance be built into stock h/u.
Kind of like the stock unit and dont really want to spend any money on new deck

Are you using a High-level in or an adjustable line output converter? Either way, you should take your audio signal from your speakers (left & right, both positive and negative). You can take signal from either the rear of the head unit or after the amp, up to you really. Take your switched accessory from behind the radio for a cleaner look and a more reliable connection. As far as the amp goes, the only reason that I can think for the amp needing to be reset is that there is some sort of shared power supply between the factory head unit and the amp.
