just my opinion, last year's MTX models are my choice. have no first-hand experience with other brands yet.
at this ratings page hifonics rates pretty good for the price.

Hifonics is great for the price. Personally, I only like their XX Line...great amps.

PS: Also, no where near the correct way to justify one as being ****ty...and the other as not. Maybe the viper wasn't making full power

9 times out of 10 when someone says "Brand x sucks"! what they really mean is "I/we did something wrong". There really are no brands out there that just out and out suck. Anyone can make the best product in the world sound horrible, on the other side of the coin, a very experienced installer can make entry level product sound unreal. For example we took a Mitsubishi Eclipse full of Digital Audio product (a division of Audiobahn) and took 3rd place in the USACi world finals for sound quality, yep it is true.
Basically go with what you like, and make sure you go to a reputable shop to install the product. Not everyone can afford the high end product (I.E. Zapco, Morel, TRU-Technology) so you have to start out somewhere. If you want reliable info on car audio products, stick to car audio forums, not always a car audio portion of a car forum, OR seek out the individuals who do this for a living, and have some serious knowledge to back it up. Good test, What does R.M.S. ACTUALLY mean?
This post is in no way to belittle anyone (individual or company) just to inform.
