dash lights wire ?
I need to find out the dash lights wire color so I can install a trans temp guage I've been tempted to go to the stealer I mean dealer to have this done but they want 90.00 an hour to bo the work . Anyone please help.
O.K. That truck is tricky because it uses a 1 wire system with different resistence values on the same wire to do different functions. The only real wires you can use would be under the hood, BUT since you're only using it to trigger aftermarket stuff and you're not trying to actually power up anything factory on the truck there is one wire you can use. If you look under the dash near the kick panel and the e-brake, you'll see a big gray connector. There is a White/Gray wire in that plug. It's the (+) trigger for I believe the left parking light. This will turn your gauge lights on whenever the parking lights are on. Make sure you test the wire to make sure you got the right one with a DMM.
I would also recommend using a relay. I'm not sure how much current can flow through that wire.
If you're not familiar on how to use a relay here is a pin assignment for the relay. You'll see the numbers on the relay and what pin they are assigned to.
30 - Hook this wire to the (+) illumination wire on your new gauges.
87 - Any fused (+) source
87a - Not used
86 - Ground
85 - Hook this to that white/gray wire you found under the dash.
That should be it.
