Show Starters: Chrysler offers first look at two 2005 Detroit show concepts!

MAC MORRISON
Posted Date: 11/16/04

Chrysler will likely turn up at the 2005 Detroit show with more concepts up its sleeve, but for now it has revealed two design studies that could pave the way for the return of a Jeep pickup truck and a Viper-based Corvette fighter.

The Gladiator draws power from a 163-hp version of the 2.8-liter common rail turbo-diesel I4 engine now available in the Liberty.

The Jeep Gladiator marks the resurrection of a Jeep pickup nameplate not heard from since the 1960s, and a body-style absent from the company’s lineup since the death of the ’80s-era Comanche.

The Gladiator is built on a unique platform but takes the simple style trail to strongly resemble the production Renegade. Senior vice president for design Trevor Creed says to expect “a lot in a short time” from Jeep’s corner of the DaimlerChrysler universe, and while DC officials deny the Gladiator is intended for production (natch), Creed’s statement, along with the development of a new platform and the Gladiator’s subdued familial cues, imply a production version might very well be on the cards.

The Gladiator draws power from a 163-hp version of the 2.8-liter common rail turbo-diesel I4 engine now available in the Liberty, with torque rated at a strong 295 lb-ft. Part-time four-wheel-drive is transferred to the wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Other trick features include a rear-seat access hatch on the driver’s side, a full passenger-side rear door, drop-down rear glass and an expandable cargo bed.

In normal configuration, the bed measures 5 feet 6 inches long; with a simple manual process, the rear seat slides beneath the bed and the entire rear bulkhead slides along rails forward into the cab to grow the bed to 8 feet. The Gladiator also features a canvas top similar to the Renegade’s, which may be folded back partially for a sun-roof effect, or removed completely.

The second concept, for now dubbed Firepower (Chrysler does not own the name and will need a new one prior to Detroit), is based on the V10 Viper’s architecture but uses the 6.1-liter, 425 hp, 420-lb-ft Hemi V8 that will see first light in the forthcoming 300C SRT-8. Again, officials say there are no production plans, but envision the car occupying the space between the Crossfire and (in theory) the ME412 in Chrysler’s performance portfolio.

Though the car is Viper-based—and Creed referenced Chevrolet’s Corvette as a key competitor (again, in theory)—the designers envision “Firepower” as more grand tourer than outright sports car; hence the softened suspension and five-speed automatic transmission. Brakes are 14-inch Brembos at all four corners, and the huge rubber measures 275/35 R19 up front, 335/30 R20 in back. Engineers estimate the car is capable of bolting from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds or less, and a 185 mph top speed.

Whether either car ever meets a production line, Chrysler has produced two concepts that would fill obvious holes in both Jeep’s and its own product lineup; executives will keep careful watch on public reaction at Detroit in January.

The car below is the Dodge Viper SRT-10 Coupe Concept shown at the Viper Owners Meet in Texas two months ago. I have been told by a source on another site, that he has heard from top brass, that another concept Viper coupe will debut at the North American Intr'l auto Show in Detroit in January. The Coupe will be a production concept of the 2006 Dodge Viper Coupe, and will look similar to this car in some ways, except for a lot of changes to the rear styling of this car! The car will also get a performance boost over the current SRT-10!

DaimlerChrysler Released Drawings:

DaimlerChrysler released these pictures today of the 2006 Dodge Charger... here is what TheCarConnection.com had to say about it...

Dodge is revving up an all-new Charger for next spring, the latest in a series of high-profile revivals from Detroit, following the return of the Pontiac GTO and the new-is-old, retro-styled Mustang.

The Charger, which was shown in concept form at last January's Detroit Auto Show, aims to capture the hearts of Baby Boomers and younger drivers alike who relish a return to the era of the muscle car. And though a relatively tame version of the '06 Charger will be offered with a 3.5-liter V-6, the emphasis will be on performance.

Expect Chrysler to focus its marketing campaign on the 5.7-liter HEMI-powered version. And well-placed sources hint that the even more beefy 6.1-liter, 400-horsepower HEMI is a "natural" to follow, though probably not immediately after the car's spring '05 launch.

The original Charger, introduced in 1966, went through a series of changes - and powertrains, including the original, 426-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 that was one of the fastest street-legal engines ever sold in the United States . Like other American muscle cars, the Charger didn't survive the oil shocks of the 1970s, at least not in its original form. In the 1980s, Lee Iacocca's struggling Chrysler rolled out the Charger badge in an effort to attach some appeal to a series of beefed up subcompacts.

If past is prologue, Dodge is likely also to follow up with an array of accessories, from appearance packages to performance parts. The automaker has already begun making forays into the profitable aftermarket for other models in its line-up, and it would be natural to appeal to this need-for-speed with the reborn muscle car.

Indeed, officials at DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group are confirming plans to take the Charger to the track next February. A NASCAR version will make its tire-spinning debut at the series-opening race in Daytona.

Meanwhile, the new Charger is expected to make an appearance in the upcoming remake of the old TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard. But the good ol' boy Duke brothers are still expected to drive around in the original Dodge muscle car.

The concept version shown in Detroit last winter kicked off a fair share of controversy, especially among those hoping for a more retro-looking design, in line with what Ford has done with the restyled, '05 Mustang. But Chrysler officials decided to go for a look representing what they felt was where the Charger would have evolved today.

General Motors adopted a similar strategy when it revived the Pontiac GTO last year. But while fans heralded the Australian-made muscle car's performance, they lamented its lackluster styling. GM insiders report they are working on a significant re-skinning of the GTO that could hit the streets by 2007.

Dodge planners haven't finalized pricing on the '06 Charger, though sources suggest the new car should stay in line with the division's new Magnum. The HEMI version of that wagon goes for around $30,000, or $3000 less than the Chrysler division charges for its big V-8-powered 300C sedan.

Default RE: 2005 North American Intr'l Auto Show Info:

LX models will have a huge buzz at NAIAS... three models will be making debuts... 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT-8, 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, and the new 2006 Dodge Charger lineup...

2006 Chrysler 300C SRT-8:
The Chrysler 300C is the 300 with the Hemi and the hefty 340-hp output. But it turns out the new C won’t be the 300 with the biggest mojo. That role is reserved for the 300C SRT-8, the big bruiser super-tuned by the boffins at the company’s in-house Street and Racing Technology Group.

2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8:
Engine: 6.1-liter HEMI V-8
Horsepower: 425
Height: 57.9 inches
Width: 74.1 inches
Length: 197.7 inches
Curb weight: 4,260 pounds
What the automaker says: "The current take-rate for the Hemi in the Dodge Magnum is 43 percent. The new SRT 6.1-liter Hemi quenches the thirst for even more power.
What you should know:With the pumped-up Hemi V-8 making an eye-popping 425 hp, this wagon rockets from 0-60 mph in just over 5 seconds.
Production possibility: Production begins this summer.

2006 Dodge Charger R/T (thats right R/T not RT like the Magnum):
Dodge has confirmed with this first sketch that it aims to again recreate some of the company's early muscle-car magic conjured by the Charger name. The Charger will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2005, and is expected to enter showrooms in the spring of 2005. True to its power image, it will carry with it the much-vaunted, 340-hp Hemi engine under the hood as an option. Its base engine is expected to be a 3.5-liter V6 making 250 horsepower.
