Drivers and driving style make a big difference, one of my friend's parents have a prius. When he drives it he gets about 45mpg average, his dad gets 56-58 average. He doesn't have a lead foot like I do either.
It seems to me that CG has never been kind to Chrysler products. Back in the 60's and 70's when I did quite a bit of wrenching on mostly Fomoco and GM products I owned Mopars and according to CG they were not good at hardly any thing. From what I saw by working on all makes had me change to Mopar and I've been there since 1964.
I for one, would give up some performance numbers in favor of a more economical car. I make due with the 140HP from my 98 Avengers 2.0. How many people actually go 0-60 in less than 6 seconds or the quarter in less than 13 seconds? As long as my car purrs like a kitten and cruises down the highway with ease I am happy getting 34MPG at 80MPH. My best trip averaged 36.6MPG from a car that was only supposed to get 32MPG. But I guess to some people cars are still about who's is faster.
