Default DCX Statement on the accident in Sweden!

Stuttgart, Feb 24, 2005
DaimlerChrysler hereby confirms that on February 22, 2005 at about 10 a.m., a tragic accident occurred during a journey to Sweden made for the purpose of engine trials. A pedestrian was fatally injured in this accident. DaimlerChrysler deeply regrets this tragedy.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was driving in third position in a convoy of eleven vehicles on their way to the test area in Arjeplog. DaimlerChrysler and other automobile manufacturers have been conducting test drives every winter at this test area for more than 20 years. The group of vehicles set off at around 7.30 a.m. and recorded data on the cold start of the diesel engine being tested. No more measurements were subsequently taken. About one and a half hours after starting the journey there was a change of drivers, when the driver took over who was in control of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

From what is currently known about the course of the accident, we can confirm that when driving out of the municipality of Ytterhogdal, the driver apparently drove straight ahead on a snow-covered road surface in a wide bend to the right, and therefore crossed over to the other side of the road. The front of his car then hit a woman who was walking along the road in the same direction. The woman was thrown onto the road surface.

The following drivers stopped immediately to give first aid. Local residents notified the emergency services, who arrived at the scene of the accident after a few minutes and also attempted to revive the victim of the accident, unfortunately without any success.

The Swedish police carried out investigations, questioned the driver and examined the accident vehicle. The driver is still available to the authorities for further investigations, but does not have to fulfill any conditions. He has meanwhile returned to Germany. He is in a state of shock and is receiving medical and psychological care. He is on leave from work until further notice. In the presence of the police, items were removed from the vehicle such as mobile phone, laptop computer etc.

According to the current status of our investigations, at the time of the accident the vehicle was travelling within the permitted speed limit and was in perfect technical condition.

DaimlerChrysler expresses its sympathy and condolences with the relatives of the victim of the accident. The company has offered support to the relatives. A friend of the family has stated that he will contact DaimlerChrysler on the family’s behalf if desired.
