December 21st, 2009 Fans of Italian styling are anxiously awaiting Fiat and Alfa Romeo's full scale return to the U.S. now that the alliance deal between the Italian auto giant and Chrysler has been well and truly signed off. One of Alfa Romeo’s upcoming models is particularly important as it will form the basis of a new Chrysler sedan planned for U.S. production. The car is the replacement for the aging 147 hatchback sold overseas, and we now have new images of the car along with its official title of 2010 Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The car was originally going to be called the Milano but a dispute between Alfa Romeo workers in Milan (Milano in Italian) and Fiat meant that the name had to be swapped. The workers were upset that Alfa Romeo was going to use the Milano name for its latest model despite the automaker shutting down its operations in the area where it was founded 99 years ago. The Giulietta will go up against rival hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf and the upcoming Ford Focus, and it will only be available as a five-door. Alfa Romeo fans after a sporty three-door can look to the smaller Mito. Under the pretty sheet metal sits a MacPherson strut suspension set-up in the front and a new multi-link design at the rear. Several engine options are available, all turbocharged and ranging between 120 and 170 horsepower. A high-performance 230 horsepower version is expected soon after launch. Transmission options include 5- and 6-speed manuals and further down the track will be a new dual-clutch automatic option. While the new Giulietta will go sale in Europe in the first half of next year, it’s still unknown when it will arrive in the U.S. but chances are it won’t be until 2011 at the earliest. Importantly, the platform underpinning the Giulietta, Fiat’s C-Evo, will be used for a new Chrysler sedan that will be designed and built in the U.S., which you can read about in our earlier story by clicking here.
