What I think you might be referring to are what's called Automated Manual Transmissions (or something like that). I've heard rumors that DCX is working on these for their vehicles. I think they're similar to some of the transmissions used in big trucks (18-wheelers). Sounds better than a conventional slushbox, but I still prefer my 5-speed gate shifter for now anyways. Those same rumors btw also mention that this AMT technology will possibly replace standard clutch-operated manual gearboxes within ten years or so. [:-]

I've participated in debates on this topic on other Dodge forums, and I can't help but throw my $0.02 into the fire here.
To each their own, but to me, having an automatic transmission is more like just being along for the ride. With an automatic, the car is driving me. But with a manual, I'm driving the car.
I just do not understand how someone can really connect with, and feel passionate about driving, a car that has an automatic transmission. Big deal. Push the right-most pedal, go forward. Yippee. Loads of fun there.
Yes, manuals can be a pain in traffic... but all in all, I'd take a manual over an automatic any day. Manuals are more fun to drive. You have more control. You don't have to deal with a shift-happy slushbox. You can anticipate what's up ahead and select the proper gear in advance. And manual transmissions offer mechanical simplicity whereas an automatic is a complex unit with a lot more stuff to go wrong inside. One of the most common complaints I've heard about the Dodge vehicle lineup is problematic auto transmissions.
I wish they offered manuals in all of the SRT vehicles. What's the point of having a performance vehicle if it's going to be limited by a power-sapping slushbox? They should at least offer the option, that way everyone can be happy.

personaly i'm glad they are putting auto's in most SRT's, i'd wouldn't buy any of them if they were manuals, I want to enjoy driving the car, not have to deal with the hastle of shifting all the time.

Exactly. The only up to a manual I can think of is the price of the vehicle, and the ability to do cornering easier. Dodge should offer that Auto/Manual combo thing!

The only up? The automatic has NO up.
