The last time an instructor from DCA was here, he said that the neon SRT4 will remain for at least a year.

I don't see why AWD would be bad for a four cylinder, expecially one that would trying to compete with the Evo and STi.

Allpar.com http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/caliber.html

Updated 8-16-05. “As quoted in Edmund’s.â€

Our source really came through — the Caliber is exactly what we were told it would be. Some of the more exciting items that were predicted: the Volkswagen diesel (for Europe, or so we’re told), and the continuously variable transmission calibrated to act like a six-speed automatic, as well as the choice of two or four wheel drive and the World Engine in three different configurations. Our 'Cuda-fan source was also right when he said, “The Caliber pictures are 98% identical to what the pilots look like! The aluminum wheels are wider on the 5 spokes, and there are lookalike wheel covers for the base car. We built the last PM49 pilot. This one is a export with a diesel. This motor should be available in the U.S. also. It's a Volkswagen diesel with a 6-speed manual! The block has 1.9/2.0 L cast in, with a Garrett turbo. Several Bosch components on the motor, with VW and Audi symbols on them! This one was only 2WD/FWD. Most of the last of the PMs have been AWD!â€

The Dodge Caliber engines, like those of the Dodge Rebel sedan/coupe, will be the 1.8 and diesel in Europe, the 2.4 in the US, and the 2.0 in both regions. A 235 horsepower turbocharged 2.4 is likely in an SRT version. The diesel engine, also used in the Volkswagen Golf range of vehicles, was apparently chosen due to cost and size; it produces a bit less horsepower than the bottom-end gas engine, but has gobs of torque available from low engine speeds (and out-torques all of the gasoline engines except perhaps the turbo). Gas mileage is expected to be excellent with this powerplant.
Remember, it's on the Lancer platform. It's the same size. You can say it's wagon or SUV sized all you want. But think about how big a Lancer is...

Dc is supposed to make performance cars, not something that is better right off the line and guzzles more gas.

No. People don't need a car that sucks overall.

We are talking about the Caliber, not the Neon.

Might have to ****** up an SRT4 ACR before long here. Looks to me like they are moving away from the enthusiast market with the Caliber.

If anyone is thinking the same, I can get all you want and sell them to you at invoice.

Pat - Rumor is that it's lighter, and what's you with your guess on weight. It's shorter but a couple inches taller. I doubt that it would weigh much more if it did weigh more. Hatchback, not station wagon.

Nick - It's going to have 4 different engine choices, not just one. 1.8L World Engine, 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.4L turbo (rumored by Allpar)

Ron - Those are old concept pics, we all have seen those.
Well I just googled the words Dodge Caliber, so I didn't expect too many new pictures.
