I don't have much experience with the 3rd or 4th gens, but between the 1st and 2nd gens, one of them is lighter, doesn't have plenum issues, and generally has stronger transmissions. The other one rides better, has more creature comforts, and is easier to find and buy parts for.
I have tried the 2006 Dodge ram wheels and even though the lug pattern is the same. the center hole for the spindle hub will not fit the later model wheel. The 2006 has a smaller shorter center hole on the front end due to different wheel bearing styles.
the rear will fit, but front will not.

The second gen was a HUGE seller. Prior to that Dodge didn't bother Ford/Chevy sales in the least. I still remember seeing my first one and thinking "I've gotta have one of those!". So I went down to the dealer and bought my first new vehicle. The color was bright Jade which is where I got my screen name.
Second Generation, although the torque and HP from the newer models is pretty enticing but I think they are adding way to much gee whiz ****. Actually I kind of prefer my 1950 PW2 126
