well the hemis in dodges muscle cars were 426 hemis. they might have had smaller ones but that was before my time so all i know about are the 426s. the ones they put in the trucks, suvs, chargers, 300c, etc. are 345 cubic inches (according to dodge).

when you ask what would you call an actual hemi im sort of confused there. i was taught that it was anything with hemispherical heads, so you could make any car a "hemi" although i dont think anyone would consider it the same since the dodge hemis are more than just hemispherical heads.

I a bit confused on what your asking, so I'm going to give you two answers. Is the modern HEMI more technologically advanced? Yes, the modern HEMI has fuel injection, dual-spark plugs per cylinder (to reduce emissions), some 5.7L (345 cu. in) have a MDS which shuts off half of the cylinders (to cut down on fuel consumption), etc. Is the modern HEMI a "real" HEMI? The current HEMI is not considered by some to be a true HEMI because from what I understand the heads are a little flat. They claim it's ployspherical. Is the current HEMI superior to the old HEMIs? It is clearly superior to the original HEMIs used in cars back in the 50's such as the 241 cu. in. used in the Dodge Royal and the 331 used the original 300 series, by producing more power per displacement (naturally since the engine is 50 years newer). Is the current HEMI superior to the 426 HEMI? It really depends on who you ask. In my eyes, it is superior because they are able to produce the same amount of hp with a 6.1L (370 cu. in.) as they got with the old 7.0L (426 cu. in.) HEMI (less torque but if they had the same displacement the torque would be similar), they are able to get it to pass the strict environmental regulations unlike the old 426, and they are able to produce it and sell it for a much lower price. The 426 HEMI was an expensive engine to build, which made it an expensive engine to buy. That is why only 11,000 were sold in passenger vehicles in a matter of 7 years. The current HEMI is least expensive V8 engine to build for Chrysler. It is cheaper to build than the old LA/Magnum engines (318/5.2L, 360/5.9L family) or the Powertech/Magnum engine (4.7L/287 cu. in. V8).

there's also a difference because you forgot that the current hemi is actually a 5.7/6.1 Magnum Hemi. also, you got feul injection and newer technology like what was stated. if we rebuilt the 7.0L hemi and dropped it into a Charger or challenger, it'll be some competition for ford and chevy

Well I think this is what you are trying to ask. Let's say you have a 6 liter V-8 and a 10 liter V-8. The 6 liter produces 500hp. The 10 liter produces 501hp. Which is more powerful? The 10 liter. I would have to say you would destroy his truck.

Yeah, a 69 Charger will completely demolish his truck. (I'm assuming you can drive)

Uh 600 cubes? And you're not sure? Are there any modern, non-modded, street cars that can stay with you? Ever dynoed? 600-700 hp would not surprise me. 3800# with 600 hp vs. a 5000# 345 hp, not much research needed.

If he can stay with you, you seriously need to dyno tune the motor, check your suspension setup, and buy new tires.
Then again, if he has 4wd and you race on wet lawns, he'd do ok.

A simple 426 HEMI in a '69 Charger will kill a 5.7L (345 cu. in.) HEMI Magnum. 425 hp & 490 ft-lbs of tq in a muscle car vs. 345hp & 375ft-lbs of tq in a half-ton truck. No contest. The Charger would eat the Ram no problem with 426 cu. in. let alone 600 cu. in. (though 600 cu. in. sounds a little high to me).
