904a to a 727 tourqeflight
Hello all. I have a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Regent 9 passenger wagon my grandpa bought new. It has a 318 with a 904a tourqeflight. It has been used since new to haul and tow, as a wagon should. Now 30 some years later the trans is on it's way out and I'm looking into the TCI street fighter 727, as I know it is a stronger trans in stock form. I'm just not sure if it'll bolt directly into the car. Is the case the same length? Is the trans crossmember mount in the same place? Is the trans yolk on the drive shaft the same?
Thank you.

Thank you.

Well, the pic is a bit more flattering than the car in person, but it's not to bad for a all original car. Just has about a 2"x2"patch of rust on both sides where the dog leg meets the rocker.
Nice wagon, not something you see that off, great that it is still out there.
Why not just rebuild the 904? The TCI 727 would probably be overkill for the car and if you re-do the 904 it stays matching numbers too (I assume everything is still original).

Well, if we go the 727 route, the original trans IS staying. The car is ALL original. Including the srapes and dents. (not many)
I don't beleive the 727 is overkill, mostly because, this has been/is our work horse. We have pulled up to a 4000lbs trailer with thecar fully loaded down. I understand you could do a performance rebuild on the 904a, but the 727 is about $700. A rebuild would be at least that. So, if it's close enough in price, even if it is overkill, at least I'll be over protected. Plus, at some point, if anything happens to the original motor, it'll be getting a well worked small block. (keeping the original motor too.)

Not to be rude, but does anyone know if a 727 (w/ a small block bellhousing) will bolt in place of a 904a? Like crossmember mount, driveshaft yolk, ect...

the short answer is no, a 727 is three or four inches longer than a 904, the trans will bolt in but you will need a shortend driveshaft. The linkage, mount, and bellhouseing are the same...
The small block 727 will bold in place. there is no differnce between a 318 360 and 340 bolt pattern on the trans...The transmission length is longer so a shorter drive shaft will have to be used....You have to use the correct tourque converter for your engine though. The 360 is externally balanced and thus has weights on the tourqe converter. 318 and ealier 340s are internally balanced. later 340s are externally balanced. I recomend when you do this just buy the correct converter for your engine. All that being said, the 904 severd well for 36 years. I would have a quality rebuild done on it with a new converter and then add a good trans cooler and call it done.
