Default Charger Rear Axle

Hi guys!

A few months ago I bought myself a -74 Charger. The car is in pretty good shape but I want to change the ratio in my rear axle. The problem is that I am not quite sure which axle I have as I am pretty new to mopars.. I believe it is an 8 1/4 and according to the info from the time the car was new, it is 2.71:1 ratio. Now I want to replace it with 3.55:1 and also but in a sure grip. Here is a picture of my axle. Can someone please confirm that this is a 8 1/4 ??

Thanks!

It appears to be 8 1/4 and the 2.71 ratio would be correct for that era. I'm not sure what your plans are for the car and how much power you plan to make, but you might wish to consider a whole axle swap to a 8 3/4. They are dramatically stronger and much easier to change gears in. You can just swap the whole center section if you later decide to go from 3:55 to 4:10 or something. They are still pretty plenitful too. Make sure you measure drum to drum to see what 8 3/4 would be the best donor swap for you. Good Luck

Agree, it's an 8 1/4. Better off finding a complete 8 3/4 rear and swap it in. They were pretty plentiful in that vintage Charger; most 360's and up came with 8 3/4 rears standard. A Plymouth B body rear should also fit with no mods. Any year from '71 through '74 would interchange.
