Charger SRT-8 vs. 360 Spyder

A rare situation presented itself today in the form of a certain snarky, Ferrari Modena Spyder-driving client that walked into my place of business yesterday. Expecting to find a kindred spirit in automobile enthusiasm, I was quite appalled at how rash and arrogant this man was. After complimenting his gorgeous, yellow 2001 Ferrari 360 Spyder (a car I have had a long-time affection for) and taking a stab at guessing the purchase price of the car, it was already quite apparent that he thought of himself as a higher form of life.

Frustrated by responses like "if you have to ask, you can't afford one" and "it's probably worth more than the house you live in" I jokingly asked if he wanted to have a quick drag race against my Charger SRT-8. His reply: "You're completely out of your league. You'd choke on the backdraft as I fly past you and leave you in the dust. It would be a complete waste of my time." He then proceeded to smirk at me wryly and asked how much money I had on me. Curious, I punched up the specs on his car and was surprised to see that the performance numbers weren't too terribly far off from a stock SRT-8. Supercars.net provided a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds. Seeing as how a typical SRT-8 has an additional 25 horsepower and 145 lbs-feet of torque (mine probably has more of each since it is equipped with a Mopar cold air intake and Cat-back exhaust), I rationalized that it would be possible our two cars would have comparable straight-line performance numbers (topspeed not included). Naturally, he wouldn't hear any of it. That was that (or so I thought). No Ferrari race today...

Later that day, after I had finished work, I happened upon this same gentleman pulling out of a local eatery- I followed him of course. It wasn't long before he and I both pulled onto the TransCanada Highway- the perfect place for a safe "acceleration test". After 15 minutes of both verbal and hemi-induced taunting (I even broke out into song singing a bar from the old '80s cartoon "My Little Pony"), he couldn't take it anymore and angrily downshifted and stabbed at his throttle. I was ready for him and almost instantaneously engaged the Hemi power. From a roll at 90 km/h (54 mph), I was delighted to see my Charger pull away from him at a pace of about .5 car lengths per second. After I had pulled about 2 car lengths ahead, I had decided that my point was proven and backed down to the posted speed limit. My counterpart apparentally couldn't fathom what had just happened, and slowed down enough to ensure that our two cars would not pull beside each other again.

All in all, I sincerely hope that this gentleman was just out of practice with his stick-shift driving, for I would be greatly disappointed with paying $163 000 USD for a car that can be outran by a family sedan. LoL My faith in the Hemi is renewed yet again.

RE: Charger SRT-8 vs. 360 Spyder
LoL I'm kinda kickin' myself right now for not taking him up on his bet. I kinda doubt that he was even serious when he said what he did, but he probably wouldn't have payed up even if he was. Still though, the victory probably would've been that much sweeter!

P.S. Has anybody here noticed a loud whining noise coming from the car when they wrap the speedo up past 180 km/h on a hot day (a hot day constituting 38*C)?

I'm not sure if it was a belt or if it was the transmission, but the car was doing it for two straight days during one of the last heatwaves. I haven't heard it make the noise since then, but it rather concerned me at the time. haha

WHAT!?!?

Im sorry but that guy has to be the worst driver in the world. The SRT-8 is a fine automobile but that Ferrari in capable hands would leave it in the dust: 360 Spyder curb weight 2385lbs. SRT-8 curb weight 4160 lbs. The SRT-8 weighs 1775 lbs more than the ferrari! Using the rough estimate 100 lbs per 10 hp rule, The srt-8 would need about 175 more horse than the ferrari to compete and it only has 30 more. I'm not saying your lying, I'm saying a driver like that guy has no business owning a ferrari.

We can sit and discuss 0-60 times, HP, torque, weight, aerodynamics of cars, gear ratios, driver ability, etc. all day long. But, when it comes down to it, winning is winning.
The fact is, Dartman69 made the stuck-up Ferrari owner make an *** out of himself, and thats all the matters.

LoL It's quite possible that it was his rotten driving which allowed me to win, but I do believe your curb weight numbers for this car are inaccurate. After cross-referencing the stats on this car over several sites, the ballpark figure for the 360 Spyder (Spider)'s weight is around 3200 lbs.

For instance:

Perhaps it is a different car that you're thinking of. *shrugs*

Back in the dark days when I worked at a Pontiyuk dealer, I had a chance to take a Ferrari 360 out for a beat run, I was not that impressed, the new Ram Air T/A would spank this car up to 120 mph. Great job in humiliating that guy, he deserved a little humble pie. Maybe I can win some money from him with my modded Daytona.

RE: Charger SRT-8 vs. 360 Spyder
I would go for the Charger SRT-8 because it's better and more affordable.

Ferarri 360 Spider

0-60:3.9 sec.
V8
400 hp
275 ft. lbs.
1/4 mile:12.2 sec.

Dodge Charger SRT-8

0-60:5 sec.
V8
425 hp
420 ft. lbs.
1/4 mile:13 sec.

So these stats are why I rather choose the Charger than the Spider. The Charger has more horses and torque and is only slower by .8 sec. on the 1/4 mile. So the Charger is better. But I still like the Ferarri. I like any car company except the Ford Company and anybody with them.
