Default Transmission

How do I tell what kind of transmission I’m running currently? I have the 273 v8 with an automatic.. and the transmission needs help. Local shops tell me it would be about 1200 bucks to fix it. I'm finding the 727 torque flights that are WAY cheap for used ones (found a 727A on craigslist for 100 bucks with a rebuild kit included) but… it would be a used transmission. So.. do you guys know if it has a torque flight 727 or something else..?

I can say with 98% certainty that you have a 904 light duty trans. Pretty much every small block with a 318 or smaller v-8 or v-6 came out of the factory with them. So chances are, that is what you have, assuming it hasn't been changed since the car left the factory. The only way to tell with absolute certainty is to take the trans. off and look at the top of the bell housing- there are raised numbers/letters on it that identify the family of transmission you have (the letters "904LA" are for the 904 i just mentioned, but if you see "727A" then you have a 727 trans on there) If you want to keep the car stock, you can get a 904 practically handed to you. I actually have 2 in the garage and if you want them, you can have them, that's how common they are out there. I don't know if the 727 will work with the engine you have, maybe someone else can help there, but I do know that a properly re-built transmission isjust as good as a new one, and cheaper too.

Almost forgot- you can also check the fender tag- the botton row, second series of letters/numbersfrom the left- D35 is for a 727, and D31 is a 904. But again, this is only good if the trans. is still the same one it came out of the factory with.

looks like it- a 904 is not a bad transmission, very reliable and tough to break, just not the one you want if you have aspirations of swapping you engine for something bigger. If you're keeping it stock, though, there's nothing wrong with re-building the 904 you've got.

I don't know what shipping would cost you but Summit Racing sells TCI Streetfighter 727s for $819.95 There should be plenty of places to buy similar out there in CA. After all that's were began. You could buy a beefed 904 with the lower first gear settoo. That is assuming you could do the swap yourself.

Google mopar or no car because I'm not sure of the proper url. Any way it's a site dedicated to 1962 to 1965 Mopars. Look around I think I read a how to on using the cable shifter on the newer transmissions. It requires some fabriacting but nothing too hard. If you have a later car with a shifter on the floor you will have to check to be sure the transmission you get has the bosses on the tailshaft housing for the pivot bracket. Mopar offered a console shift and the Slap-stick on both 904 and 727 equipped cars.
