Looking to buy a cummins
Hey guys,
Had my 05 Hemi for close to two years now and have loved every min of it and have never once looked back but I am ready to upgrade to a cummins. I want a 2006 or 2007 5.9L 4 door 4wd. Is there any known problems I should watch for when I go test driving in these year makes? I am also trying to decide rather I want an automatic or a standard. I love driving a standard and I have missed having one since I got my hemi but I also like the automatic because you have to shift gears allot here in the mountains of WV. Thoughts on this? Which one of the two is going to go the longest with out giving me problems. I want the most long lasting least amount of part replacing I can get. Looking to get one around the 50k-60k mile range. I do not do allot of really heavy towing. Just hauling the 4 wheelers and the wood pellets for the stove come winter time. Thanks for any and all thoughts.
I am completely new to the cummins so please point out even the most obvious things.
Thanks... Matt

With ~600 lb-ft of torque, you won't have to shift all that much.
The 48re trans is decent, but you will have to have it rebuilt at some point.
However, the g56 manual trans isn't without issue, namely the dual mass flywheel. That's fixed by swapping in a good (read: South Bend) clutch and flywheel for a tick over a thousand bucks.
It sure as hell beats dropping $5k on a built auto trans though.
