I dont think it has ever been changed and my avenger has 160k on it. the fluid is reddish brownish (not as red as it should be) and doesnt smell burnt, but i want to start fresh. I read somewhere that a fluid change can ruin it because of the grit in the fluid from use is actually what is keeping the tranny going and without it, it would just slip because it is so worn down. Is this true? Can I change the fluid?

 

I would change it but suggest dropping the pan AND change the filters

 

Also make sure you put the right fluid back in.
