Default Transmission woes

I'm looking at buying a 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible. Yes, I know this is for Dodge Avengers but the Haynes manual is for both cars. The car I'm looking at is pristine and in great shape except for the transmission. It only has reverse. It runs good in reverse, but won't move forward. I try to avoid FWD cars as I was trained in the 1960's and don't care for the cramped quarters However, while I'm looking at putting another unit in it, and changing the timing chain and water pump while everything is out, is it possible there's something else that might be the problem like a failed solenoid?

When I went back to look at it, their kid mentioned mom and dad were fighting and she threw it into reverse going about 50. So I passed on it 2 years ago.
