Console Fuse Problem
Hello group:
I have a 2007 Dodge Caliber. It is standard transmission, relatively basic model - I bought from showroom so I did not select any of the options. It has A/C, power windows and door locks, and that is about it for extras (oh yean, Siri radio)
Recently, as I unlocked the door using key fob, I got in the car and started it up. I noticed the A/C appeared to be out so I pressed the A/C button. Nothing happened. Anyway, to make a long story short, I soon realized that the indicator light was not working. Then I noticed the dome light was also not working. The indicator lights blinked, but the little clicking sound was not clicking. And finally, what I noticed was the power door locks no longer worked.
I took the car to the dealer, and I had just shy of 12,000 miles on it - but - I was 1 month over the manufacturers warranty period. Well, I had purchased the extended 5 year 100k mile warrenty so I was relatively assured they would fix the problem under warranty - well, it cost me 110.00 plus a 37.00 rental to fix an 88 cent fuse problem. It turns out the fuse was the console fuse, and fuses are not covered under warranty. Okay, well so I coughed up the 110.00 and drove home.
Everything was fine for exactly 7 days, and now the problem has come back. The same symptoms.
Does anyone know of any history with this problem? I suspect the problem is with the power door locks, but it is really annoying and I don't want to take the car back to the dealer because it is very inconvenient for me. Well, anyway, what should I tell them to look for if this problem has shown up before. I find these forums quite useful because somewhere, someone has already come across this problem.
Also, is the console fuse in the fuse box? I don't really know why it costs 110.00 if it is. Or is it an in-line fuse or something? I will crack the manual tomorrow but I appreciate any insight.
Thanks in advance.
Don

You are right about the warranty - what I meant to say is that the extended warranty doesn't kick in until the manufacturer's warranty expires. Something like that - anyway - fuses are not covered under the warranty - but it appears there is something other than the fuse wrong - maybe a short in the door locking mechanism. One minor annoyance is that I cannot open the hatch without the automatic door unlocking function - even the side panel lock/unlock button doesn't work.
Other that this, I love the car - it is very practical for my needs.

Dtoronto do you know where the fuses are located?
I might suggest you check them yourself as they are accessible
and easily checked.
There have been posts on Caliber forums talking of fuses that
were not seated properly causing intermittent and strange
problems.
I would suggest you also try another dealer, fuses are such a
minor item in the cost scheme that any dealer who charges
$110.00 and you have the extended warranty is dishonest
at best.
Your signature suggests where you are located but I am sure you
should be able to find a dealer who is capable of resolving
your problem and all dealers must honour the warantees.
Make sure you have all your paperwork with you.
