Automatic transmissions kick down to a lower gear to make use of the greater power delivered at the engine’s higher rpm; this typically occurs when you attempt to accelerate from a constant speed, as if to pass.

Kick down just means the transmission is changing gears based on throttle input. If you're in a higher gear, say just cruising along and you press the pedal hard and fast enough the transmission will "kick down" into a lower gear to provide more acceleration. There is no "best way" to use it, it's all automatic.

You don't "use" it per se. It's a built in function of the transmission. The vehicle will use it when it needs to based on driver input. It is to give a boost of acceleration during passing conditions or you want a quick increase of speed.

The Caliber uses a CVT transmission. it doesn't have gears like most transmissions. It has two self adjusting pulleys and a metal style belt. It is designed to keep the rpm at peak power depending on how far you push the pedal. It is a bit weird feeling at first, but you get used to it.
