Default Engine Cooling Fan problem

I have 2010 Dodge Caliber and I've started having issues with the Transmission overheating to the point where it doesn't move forward. Had the transmission serviced at the local Dodge dealership but that only worked for a Month. I thought that was the only issue because the dealer said the fans were working. I just came from out of town and the coolant temperature went up in idle. I turned off the a/c and that helped a little but in idle the temperature went up 3/4 of the way. I pulled over and saw that the fans were not on until the a/c was on and that was on one side only. I have heard either the a/c compressor or the cooling fan turning off. Any help would be wonderfule
