Default 07 Caliber Dies Unless Gas Is Pressed

Hello,

I have a friend who is wanting me to repair their 07 Caliber, but I want to make sure I am fixing the right thing.

Her car will stall out unless you keep your foot on the gas pedal. When driving it you have to keep giving it a little gas even when stopped or else it will die.

Any advice on what may be going wrong would be appreciated.

What engine? How many miles? Scanned for codes? Maintenance up to date? Need more info.

I had a Dakota back in '94 that was not quite a year old do that. Twice it went to the dealer with the same issue. After warranty, I tore into it and all it needed was a cleaning on the throttle body. Try cleaning the throttle body and see what happens. Be sure to use throttle body cleaner and NOT carburetor cleaner. Gummout even said for years on the can to NOT use it on throttle bodies. Pull the intake system apart until you can get to the throttle body. Clean it with the cleaner and a paper towel. Don't use cloth. A piece of paper will burn off if it gets in. Cloth may not. Rub the paper around until it comes out clean. Reassemble everything and start it. It will run like crap for a bit and might be hard to start. It will eventually burn all the gooky stuff off and smooth out. This may clear the problem if it's just dirty.
