Default When to order?

My financial situation requires me to save up for a couple of months so that I can put a decent down payment on my new car. I'm curious as to when I should go into a dealer and start to work everything out. I'm thinking I should have enough saved up and be prepared to sell my current car by June. Do I need to wait until then to talk with a dealer or is it possible to go in and order the car but not give them any money until it actually comes it? I would like to time it so that when I get all my money together I can just walk in and get my car instead of waiting even longer.

What you're asking really depends on the dealer. My Dodge dealer down town requires you to put 10% down for them to order a car for you. The dealer I go to about 15 miles away doesn't require that you put anything down for them to order a car for you. So, like I said, it depends on the dealer. I guess the best thing to do is to ask them if they require a down payment and if they do, how much.

The only bad thing about doing a trade in, is I can almost guarantee you that you won't get as good of a deal as if you just walked in with cash and tried to strike a deal. Its always cheaper if you don't have a trade because then the dealer doesn't have to try and figure out how to get rid of your car, especially if its a mediocre car as far as condition goes. But if you don't have any choice as it sounds like you don't, then thats what you have to do. Now saying that, I plan on trading in my 2004 Stratus R/T Coupe, but my car is in nearly mint condition with only a couple of stone pecks in it and no dents, or heavy scratches in the paint. Interior is just like it was when I got it brand new.

Figure about 6 to 8 weeks to get your Caliber in if you decide to have the dealer order one for you with the options you want. At least, thats what dealers are telling me, about 6 to 8 weeks. So you're roughly going to have a month and a half, almost 2 months to wait. So thats about a month and a half more to save up.

+2 on 04StratusR/T..

I'd sell the car seperatly, don't trade it if you don't absolutely have to..
