Default big problems with 98 caravan

Hello everyone Ihave some questions that maybe someone could help me out with bear with me on terms and stuff not mechanically inclined in any way. This afternoon I got into my van and only the D L and 3 Were working in my gear shift panel. I was able to start it and everything however when I started to drive my odometer was not working so I turned into this shop and they said it was probly the main computer and it would be a VERY expensive repair. Ok my main questions are if I was to have someone be able to find one at a salvage yard does the computer have to be programmed or can you just install it? Is it apossibilty that it could be something else electronical? Should I even get the computer from a salvage yard? Hopefully someone could answer this stuff for me I would be so thankful

It may not be a controller. Its maybe the output speed sensor which is 25 to 35 dollars from the dealer.Thats just the part. Plus labor to install the part. Here is a easy way to remember the sensors, looking at the transmission from the front of the radiator, your left hand is the input sensor and the right hand is the output sensor.

How would I be able to figure out if it was that? Would it have to have a diginostic test to figure the specific problem out?
