service engine soon light
Wondered what the CEL light is that I'm supposed to watch flash to get codes. Figured since it's dark outside, I'd be able to spot it quickly enough. Followed the "on, off, on, off, on" precedure but can't find any flashing light.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the key? Or just don't know what to look for.
CEL??
Thanks,
Rob

this code is left off of many sites. It is actually catalytic converter inefficiency. However, I have found in the past that it is actually a problem somewhere else, such as spark plugs or wires, or something that is making the car run rough and too much fuel is getting into the exhaust.
43 - Ignition coil primary circuits and engine misfires. That code can be broken down to 10 more specific scanner "P" codes that will tell you which of the three coils has a problem or which of the 6 cylinders is misfiring. Head to an AutoZone for a free scan.

You can check for the codes yourself by using the key on/off method. Turn the key on, off, on, off, then on and watch the CEL flash. It will flash once, pause, twice, pause, then count the number of flashes following each pause. That will give you a number. For instance, just did mine, flashed 1,2, 3,1, 5,5. The 12 is always the beginning, the 55 means it's done. Whatever's in the middle is your trouble code. If you do this and post the code, one of us will tell you what it means and help you troubleshoot ideas to fix it. You could also take it to most any auto parts store and they can put a scanner on it and tell you what the code is.

The "service engine soon" light on my '99 dodge caravan 3.3L went on. I also notice that the transmission is not shifting. It is in 3,000 RPM at 60kph. I'd like to see the trouble code so I tried turning the key on, off, on, off and then on but I could not see any flashing light. Where is the CEL? Is it in the dash board?
Please help.
Thanks
