I would replace your flex brake line. The interior of the flex line has collapsed and is trapping the brake fluid, and not allowing the fluid to return to the master cylinder. This blockage will keep the brake pad bearing against the brake disc, causing excessive brake pad wear and overheating. Consider replacing both front flex lines at the same time, to prevent future brake problems.

How fast does this happen? After miles and miles of driving? Did it just start?

You might want to consider replacing the master brake cylinder, and doing a complete flush of the brake fluid. I had a similar problem to yours on our Outback wagon. Wife pulled into the driveway one day with smoke pouring from the font wheel wells. I replaced the master cyclinder & that fixed the problem. I suspect one of the seals in the master cylinder fell apart or hung up and would not allow the pressure in the line to bleed off, thus keeping the pad in hard contact with the rotor.
