Idle problem with my 1989 Doge Caravan
Hello Forum,
After replacing the timing belt as well as the water pump, I been experiencing problemswith the engine speed on my 1989 Doge caravan 2.5L. It have 134,000 milesI noticed that the speed on the enging seem to be going up and down. In addition, I noticed that the radiator cooling fan start running quickly. In the past, the radiator cooling fan started running after 7 or 10 minutes of the engine running. Is this normal? Furthermore, I checked the van self diagnose lights, and I get code 12, and 25. Code 25 refer to the Automatic Idle Speed Motor. I installed another computer that I have as a spear and I get the same codes. Can code 25 be affecting the speed on the engine? You people at the forum had been very helpful to me in the past expecially Master Tech. Any positive feedback will be greatly apreciated. Thanks

Reck your timing, and ck for any vaccum leaks. Did you have the IAC motor out, if so ck and see if the o-ring is on the motor. Also bleed the air out of the cooling system too. Do you know how to ck base timing with a timing lite? If you don't send a pm and I'll tell you.
Hello Master T.,
After having the timing bell replaced, I been noticing that the engine seem to be running faster than it should. I try to fine tune the timing on the distributer by using a timing light, but I can't see the black line in the bellhousing. Before replacing the timing bell I was able to see the timing light, but not now. Can anyone tell me what is the normal rpm for this 2.5 engine? The friend who changed the timing bell didn't seem to be knowlageble with the procedure of changing the timing bell. I provided the technical manual so that he could use it for changing the bell, but he refused to use it. As a result of this, I was stuck about 12 miles from where I live because the van didn't start. I had to take another friend who is a mechanic to align the marks on the cranckshaft and camshaft. Unfortunately, this second friend is battling with throat cancer and he couldn't do any heavy lifting or pushing. The idle speed motor is not functioning properly. Could this part cause the engine to malfunction as speed is concerned. Thanks

Sure. after you get the engine running, unplug the temp sensor and the fan will come on. this is how you ck base timing.then turn engine off before plugging the wire back on the sensor. And clear any codes.
Thanks Master T.
I did unplug the temperature sensor to check the timing mark. However, I don't see the black timing mark on the bell housing. I try to clean the flywheel using small painters brush and mild soap, but I still don't see the timing mark. I have checked the timing mark before replacing the timing bell and it was there. I will like for somebody to tell me if a bad Automatic Idle Speed Motor ( idle air speed motor) will affect the egine's performance. If you can, please explain how does it affect the engine. Thank you

Hear is another way to see if you timing belt is lined up. Bring the line thats on the torque converter around to zero on the bell housing and then ck the timing marks. The line on the torque converter is what you line up to the mark. The AIS motor has steps in the motor to control the idle speed, it doesn't affect performance, but affect idle, or ever cause the engine to stall when coming to a stop.
