When I press the button to open the driver's window a squeal comes from the door until the window starts to move. Sometimes the window will stop part way donw and the squealing will start again. Pushing down on the glass does not help (rules out glass stuck in track); it will start moving on it's own after a few seconds. Sometimes it goes down in one move, sometimes it stops 3 or 4 times on the way down. It happens both in auto-down and when I hold the button. No problem with going up.

The noise is a squeal, not a squeak, not a grind. Like a high pitched buzz. Almost sounds like it could be coming from the switch.

Any ideas?

You may want to replace the window channel. And spray silicone spray to lube the channels too.
