Radio Question.
My 98 has the Infinity option and I have a question about it. Do they have a safety feature that quiets them down if something is wrong? I'm asking because I started the car the other day when I must have left the volume all the way up. When the radio turned on it was full out blasting the song and sounded awesome and I was shocked that it was so good sounding. Then I was disappointed after about 1 second when it lowered the volume and wouldn't turn back up. I tried turning it on and off a few times and it is loud each time for a second.
Is it detecting a problem? I think so bcause I think it has a problem. Sometimes the front right amplifier takes a few seconds longer to turn on but it sounds fine once it does. But it doesn't do this all the time.
Any ideas?

My AM/FM/CD/Tape Infinity Head Unit did the same exact thing. Next thing it started doing was not coming on except when it felt like it and it would suprise the fire out of me. It started getting progressively worse. One day I smelt something burning and it was coming from the stereo. Then it worked fine for 2 weeks then started the procedure all over again. Volume Going down, Turning off and coming on when it felt like it, and then it started spitting out the CD's and tapes. Mine finally bit the bullet when a lightning arch hit the van and fried out the relays, fuses, and of course the stereo. The only thing I can suggest is replacing the head unit with an aftermarket unit, but you have to find one that has a remote wire so it will be compatible with the van's wiring. HTH J.R.
it sounds like you guys have a loose ground, i say this because i have installed many stereos (stock and aftermarket) when a ground comes loose it can cause the stereo to loose sound, turn on and off a especially if a disc is in it spit it out.
pull the head unit out and look for the ground (black wire) and see if it is loose or if it is fraed and touching any of the live wires (red is the main power and yellow is the constant or memory wire) all other wires relate to the speakers, dimmer (orange) and power antenna (solid blue if equipped) or if it touching anthing metal.
if that checks out trace the black wire to se where it is ground and check the that grounding point but this point of ground being loose is usually indicated by the auxlury power (cigarette lighter) also not working.
give this a try and good luck

Thanks. Ill check the grounds when I get a chance and see if there are any problems there. I still don't understand why it turns itself down. Is the head unit smarter than I think and it is protecting itself of the amps by lowering the max volume?
the volume will turn itself down or off depending on the short try it with your stereo in the house and you'll see what i mean, also check for shorts in the speaker wires.

Due to the complexity of the infinity system and all the wiring associated with it, I don't think it is worth it to even try to find a short. The van will be gone in a few months most likley so I will live with it. I didn't even know there was a problem until I accidentally left it turned up.
