Tranny service intervals in "02 Grand Caravan

I just purchased a '02 Grand Caravan Sport and the owners manual says the oil in the tranny does not have to be changed under normal use. I really find that hard to believe. Please explain

Yes they say filled for life but I would definitely have a fluid and filter change if it has more than 50K on it.
I think filled for life is ridiculous...
