2001 Dodge Caravan Leak at AC Air Filter
Type: 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan.
Problem. I have clear water leaking from my HVAC near the front passenger’s feet. The only information I could find that even remotely resembled my problem is water blowing back through the drain hole. I found this problem described on many locations on the internet, Service Bulletins, and even direct conversations with a Dodge service manager. The recommended solution was to apply silicon around the area of the firewall where the drain hole passes through. Although I did not think this was my problem I tried it anyway, because that is the most common answer. That solution did not solve my issue.
My problem is that water is leaking from the area of the air filter opening – not leaking in from the firewall seal. If you were to look at the leak from the passenger side it is most prominent on the left (or rear on the unit) - see picture 1. When the air filter is removed I can see what looks like a thin black plastic strip that runs along the top lip of the air filter opening and along the lower evaporator housing at the bottom edge of the evaporator coil. The plastic strip looks like it has been torn or broken away from the evaporator housing (see picture 2) - although I can't tell if the plactic is a molded part of the housing or if it was inserted as a seal of some type. Could the strip be some sort of water dam or shield or if the strip is broken away could it chave caused a crack in the evaporator housing that would allow water to leak into the front passenger floor? Does anyone have a recommended solution?
