Power steering filter/reservoir
So if I replace this myself what is the best way to flush or can I? The dealer wanted 280 to replace my reservoir, and I found one at the parts store for like 15.00, the problem is the dealer was going to flush the old fluid out. So can I do that at home?
You can do this yourself. Go the hardware store and buy vinyl tubing to fit over the suction and return lines to the reservoir. Connect the tubing to the larger tube (suction) and connect the other line to a full quart of ATF+4. Connect another vinyl tube to the smaller tube (return line) and run that into a used oil container.
Start the engine and run for only a few seconds. Refill the ATF+4 bottle. Repeat procedure until you've run through about 2 quarts. Then remove the vinyl tubing, connect the hoses to the new reservoir, fill the reservoir, and bleed the system using the procedure below. You're done. Cost? 3 quarts ATF+4 and about $5 of vinyl hose. Oh, plus the cost of the vacuum pump (which you should own anyways for brake bleeding and other auto jobs.)
