hi all,
so the serpentine belt flew off in the pouring rain tonight, i put it back on figured out the right way to put it back on and drove it home as it began to overheat. the pulley circled in the pic is the one thats bad, it is not a ribbed pulley but a smooth faced one. please help so i can replace this thing and get my grocery hauler back on the road lol

 

Water pump?

 

my apologies the vehicle is a 1994 and it is the 3.3l fwd model... sorry about that lol

 

Smooth faced pulleys that are powered by the back of the belt are always water pumps.

 

What about smooth pulleys that are Idler or tensioner pulleys. But in this case it's the water pump pulley and I'll bet the bearings on the water pump failed. Hopefully they didn't cook the engine!!!!!! BTW there's a sticker under the hood that shows routing and each pulley is labeled.

 

thanks all, so i got a new water pump and started removing the bolts that bolt the housing to the block, and guess what they all broke off at the heads but one! great, an hour long job is now gonna take like 10 trying to get this things out in the 5 inchs of space i have.. god help me

 

There's several easy ways to solve this problem... unfortunately I doubt you have the tools (I use a welder as part of the removal process. Also If I feel one about to break, I stop there and devise a plan to remove the rest without breaking them. The old saying... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Oh and to make access a bit easier, support the engine, separate the front engine mount and lower the engine, You'll have a straight shot at all the bolts. Also if you soak them with PB blaster this will help. A little heat on the aluminum housing also helps but don't go nuts with heat.

It's round with some holes in the center. No need to thank me, it's what I do.
