Doing an a/c compressor is not that hard. You have two bolts and one nut that keeps the compressor on the engine, unless you have 2.4L engine or a 3.0L. If you are having this much problem with replacing the compressor. It maybe time to get professional help.

If you don't mind, I would like to ask you similar questions. My compressor locked-up (dealer wants $1,400 to fix) I was viewing your response and went out to my van. The compressor is easy to see. I called a part store and they recomended purchasing a drier (also). Okay, but I don't see it. And is this an easy part of the comperssor replacement effort ?

Yes, replace the drier. There will be so much crap in the system from the compressor blowing up that you need to at least replace the filter/drier. It is the silver cylinder that is right behind the air filter housing.
