The whine sound you maybe hearing is from the power steering reservoir. It maybe low or the filter inside is a bit plugged. You may want to replace the reservoir and replace the p/s fluid to atf+4. If the fluid is low, ck the steering system for any leaks.

it'd be nise to know like ware teh sound is like pass side, drive side, id think that if the ps pump was the prob the steering would be stifer cold vs hot.

I think what the illiterate guy is saying, when you hear the whinning and steer the wheels back and forth, does the pitch of the whinning change?

no, it seems more rpm based which makes it more strange that it stops when it gets up to operating temp. i'll open her up in the a.m. and look & listen.

92dak- yes, that is the case. before i started it i made sure there wasn't anything loose or flopping around under the hood. after i started it the noise began, not as loud b-cuz it wasn't as cold, but when i turned the steering wheel from side to side you could hear it.
