96 grand caravan, am I totally screwed?
Theres many things wrong/being fixed with our P.O.S. van.. but i wont go into all of them basically new PTU so both shafts came out.. now im reading that if you take out both shafts at the same time your trannys gears will like fall and get in the way.. is this true? because the shafts dont seem to go back in correctly.. if it is.. what should I do?.. and dont say blow it up cuz thats what im leaning towards..
blow it up.. as you said it's a POS that thought is far from true. How would you replace the transmission? you can't have the axles in to remove the trans, and you have to remove the pto from the trans before removal. You realize that the axles have a snap clip and you need to force pop them in. the driver side is somewhat difficult to install the axle because of the tight space and getting it in straight.
No they don't fall out, first of all are working on a AWD (all wheel drive) van? Because i know you wrote about replacing a PTU, if all you are replace is the PTU. You only need to remove one axle, not both. If you are replacing the transmission, then remove both axle assy. There are a few members that are techs on the forum that can answer your questions, you will see who they by posting. They will give not give you the wrong answer. But you need to help them too, with as much information so everyone can help you.
sorry, i should have posted more info.. well we had to take them both out to change the PTU because the drivers side needed changing anyways so they're both out.. theres a bar thingy going across the hole through the transmission if you look in from the side.. i thought this might have been something that fell so i poked it with a long bar and nothing happened, is it supposed to be there? and yes i know theres a snap ring lol but it seems much more difficult than any other ones ive changed to get in cuz i know the splines are lined up but even a whack with a maul wont push it in.. maybe i just have to try harder.. and yes AWD
