What's proper way to rotate tires?

I've read different ways of which way and direction and this and that about rotating tires on various vehicles. So with the Carvan. Is there a standard direction the tires should be rotated everytime..ie; front to back on same side, swapping passenger side to driver's side on the front/rear respectively...etc?
