Default 1998 caravan needs a new tranny

I'm sure no one's surprised at this. We picked our van up 2 years ago with 8000 miles on it. We thought we were getting the equivalent of a new car. The van now has 17,000 miles on it & the tranny is making noises. Just pulled the pan & there is quite a bit of aluminum chips in the pan. So, now I am looking to put a used transmission it it. I have a friend who will rebuild this one, but I don't want to be without the van while he takes his time rebuilding it. I have the 1998 caravan sport with the 3.8l engine & 4 speed tranny. The manufacture date was June 1998. Can anyone tell me what is the newest year of transmission that I can put in my van where it will bolt up & plug in properly? Can something like a 2004 work with slight modification? Any help will be very much appreciated. I tried searching threads, but haven't found anything answering my questions. This seems to be the best forum for the dodge caravan. Thanks for letting me be part of it. Looking forward to any & all responses!

Welcome to DF
As long as the TRS and the torque converter lines up th the flex plate, the 2004 will fit. Also may should the transmission lines fit too.

I don't have the luxury of running back & forth to the pick a part. Is there a way to tell that everything will work without first removing the existing transmission & comparing? I'd hate to buy one, bring it home to find out it doesn't fit.

The TRS has two type of pins, flat and round.Has far as the transmission lines connectors you can take the ones off your old trans. The flex plate, see if you can have off the engine that trans is coming out of. Or get a replacement trans from a 1998 to 2000.
