[3rd Gen : 96-00]: Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Solenoid pack
Hi,
I have a Dodge Caravan year 2000.
:: The Transmission Shop ::
While driving it dropped to 2nd gear.. tranny mechanic said its in "limp mode" and plugged his computer in and it displayed something like LR solenoid and RL solenoid and he said its cheaper to replace the entire Solenoid Pack for $300 and so he replaced it... a week later the caravan dropped to 2nd gear again and the tranny mechanic plugged in his computer again and the same errors came up LR Solenoid and RL Solenoid so he kept the caravan to investigate the problem and a week later he said he couldnt find anything else wrong and therefor it is probably a bad TCM $340+install+tax = TOO MUCH FOR ME.
:: my investigation ::
But I'm thinking its not a bad TCM, maybe its a bad wire from the tcm connector to the fusebox and/or battery. So i tried to test the wires that plug into the tcm.
I disconnected and removed the battery.. i unscrewed/detached the large plug which goes into the TCM.. i set my multimeter to "continuity" and attached one of the multimeter leads to the wire which normaly connects to the positive battery terminal and the other multimeter lead i used to touch the metal connectors inside each hole of the tcm connector/plug.
The tcm connector/plug has something like 60 holes, but only 20 of which have a wire in them. Those are the holes/wires i tried testing with my multimeter set to continuity. However, only about ten of those holes/wires seem to have continuity according to my multimeter. And I repeated the test except this time i connected one of the multimeter leads to the negative terminal instead of the positive terminal. And Still half of the wires have no continuity.
Does anyone know what im talking about?
Is what im doing making any sense?
How should i test the wires?
How do i remove the fusebox, it seems to be attached at two swivel points.
Im |this close| to unplugging the entire wire assembly lol
Regards,
DodgePissed
PS: the tranny mechanic insisted the original solenoid pack which i had paid $300 for him to replace did infact need replacing.. he said after it was removed he had tested it and it was indeed burnt - i dont beleive him but that was months ago now so who cares at this point.
PSS:
Id like to take apart the entire caravan :-)
okay maybe just the engine & tranny :-)
....but i dont have a jack :-(

Symptom:
P0750-L-R SOLENOID CIRCUIT
When Monitored and Set Condition:
P0750-L-R SOLENOID CIRCUIT
When Monitored: Ignition key is turned from the OFF to RUN position and/or key is
turned from the CRANK to the RUN position, then every 10 secs thereafter, or when a
speed ratio or pressure switch error occurs. All 4 solenoids are tested for continuity
continuously.
Set Condition: If a solenoid is On, power is momentarily interrupted, then reenergized. If
solenoid is Off, power is momentarily energized, then deenergized. If an inductive spike is
not sensed by the TCM, it is retested. If the solenoid fails 4 times the code sets.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
CHECKING SYMPTOMS AND POSSIBLE CAUSES
LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE CAUSING SYMPTOM
TCM PIN 53 TO GND OPEN
TCM PIN 57 TO GND OPEN
TCR OUTPUT (SWITCHED B+) OPEN
L-R SOLENOID CONTROL CKT SHORT TO GROUND
SOLENOID CNTRL CKT TO SOLENOID CONNECTOR OPEN
L-R SOLENOID SHORTED IN SOLENOID PACK
TCM OPEN GROUND DEFAULT
TRANSMISSION SOLENOID PACK OPEN (L-R SECTION)
INTERMITTENT CODE P0750
TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY
1 With the DRBIIIt, read DTC’s.
Is the Starts Since Set Counter 3 or less ?
All
Yes ® Go To 3
No ® Go To 2
2 Record all DTC’s and one trip failures.
With the DRBIIIt, erase DTC’s.
Start and run the Engine for a minimum of thirty seconds.
Did the erased DTC come back ?
All
I dont know if this is what you are looking for? But i do have the dealers test for these codes on a pdf file,if you want the rest of the pdf file,i can email them you.All i need is you email address to send them too.

Thanks for reading my post and replying though i only understand a little of what you quoted :-) ... id just like to know *how* to test the wires from the tcm to fusebox and what the test results should be. For instance, should all the 20 wires have "continuity" to positive terminal or negative terminal? Or half and half? Or maybe i should put the battery back and test for voltage? Am i even using the multimeter properly? lol
Thanks

I have a similar issue with my 96 3.3 caravan. My altinator went out now the transmission wont shift out of 2nd gear. The code came back with solenoid D error. The guy at the parts shop said the computer needs a quick learn. Im going to do that tonight. I'll let you know if it works.
can anybody tell me how to properly test tcm for ground i have a p0755 code changed solenoid pack checked wires from tcm connector to trans connector all had continuity but computor says check tcm and solenoids for ground does not make sense need step by step instructions i might be a little slow thanks
