Default Rear Brakes 04 Caravan

Hello all,

The rear brakes (drum) just started making some noise, very little on braking. No shudder or pulsing or anything. Went to take off the rear drums and noticed they were in pretty rough shape rust wise.

On rotating the drum I noticed it would move fairly freely but catch/or offer more resistance in one spot, is this normal?

Got the drum off without much trouble and noticed both shoes look to be worn at the ends, again is this normal? I haven't dealt with drum brakes before so I wasn't too sure what to expect.

The inside of the drum looks pretty rough, will try to include a picture or a link to pics. If I get a chance.

Any thoughts? My thinking is that at a minimum the shoes need to be replaced but don't really want to do it if something else is wrong or if everything is actually working as it should be.

The drums maybe out of round, You may want to replace the rear shoes and resurface the rear drums too.

both things you described are totally normal, see it all the time. thin shoes and out of round drums.
because the rear brakes dont do a whole lot you wont feel the pulsations, but they are there.
at least your wheel cylinders are dry
looking at those pics theres gobs of lining still on those, unless the bottom of the shoe is thinner? dunno cant see it in pic

lol if it was my truck it would just be getting a new set of drums,

get yourself a cheap adjuster tool or sacrifice a slotted screwdriver to bend as you need to spin that starwheel when the drum is on to adjust it (tip: the more lubed the starwheel and threads are, the easier it is to turn when your doing it blind) i can see they r pretty rusty when you take em off run em across a wire wheel then grease em(preferably with silicone brake grease)(dont use oil or a grease that will run off with heat, nickel based antisieze works too its good to 2500 degreesF)

IMHO breaks are pretty cheap and they are safety related so dont cheap out, put new drums and shoes on it.
and unless you know someone to turn them its usually not worth the money to cut them just replace em and have new ones.
they will last a real long time probably another 6 years, how many front pads have u done in 6 years??

.
