1992 Digital Instrument Cluster repair?
I have a '92 Town and Country with an all digital instrument cluster. I'm currently on my third cluster in the four years I've owned the vehicle.
The cluster was dead when I got it. I ordered one from a junk yard, but part of that one didn't work either, so I used the front board from the original and the rear board from the replacement and got a working cluster... or so I thought. It had some sort of electrical issue where it would slowly drain my battery, and it got worse until the battery could no longer be charged.
A shop replaced it with yet another one, which worked until a couple of months ago. I've been relying on my GPS for a speedometer and the trip computer for a pseudo gas gauge. However, I've also had my water pump and alternator die in the time that I've had no gauges, so I am not so fond of playing the "Why is the van making that BING noise?" game.
Any tips or tutorials on fixing one of these? I currently have two of the dead ones (one in the van itself) and if I can fix one, rather than order yet another from halfway across the country, I'd like to try that.
I did remove and do a visual inspection of the current instrument cluster and didn't notice any parts that seemed bad (ie. no boiled capacitors, no loose components).
